Help! took longer. We had more time. Lots more money and I had to tell the fans to 'get out' in lots of different languages. During the filming, The Beatles discovered marijuana. There was lots of smiling.

—Richard Lester, Director of Help! and A Hard Days Night, 1965

Help! was where we turned on to pot and we dropped drink, simple as that. I've always needed a drug to survive. The others too, but I always had more, more pills, more of everything.

—John Lennon, 1972

Marijuana was a giggle to the boys and it enabled them to relax. The trouble was that they smoked it whenever they could, on the film sets of their second film Help!, the recording studios, and at home. When they smoked, the merry-go-round stopped for a while. The world looked brighter.

—Cynthia Lennon, 19__

[Help!] marked the beginning of their most fertile period of songwriting. John wrote the film's title track, using the word 'help' to explore his own anxiety. It was to remain one of his favourite Beatles' songs. Paul's 'Yesterday,' which was used on the non-soundtrack side of the album, went on to become the most covered of all the Beatles' song and the first to become an acknowledged classic.

—Steve Turner, A Hard Day's Write, 1994
